Geeky Girl Post:No.6 Review. Warning:Spoilers

Okay, time for another Geeky Girl post, Today's review is the Japanese anime series No.6.
Because of spoilers I will put it under a

No.6 is actually a manga series but because I have only been able to get the anime, that is what I will review. When I can get the manga series, I will review that as well.

No.6 is a Japanese anime that is set in the future. It was directed by Kenji Nagasaki and the music is by Keiichi Suzuki.

The series that I have is in Japanese with English subtitles. There is a copy where it has been dubbed into English but because I don't have it, I am unable to review the English speaking cast.

No.6 starts off with the main character, a young gifted boy called Shion. He lives in the beautiful and idyllic city of No.6. Due to a series of devastating wars, the Earth's population have been reduced to living in five cities scattered around the world.

Shion, an intelligent, idealistic boy is enrolled in the gifted classes who was on his way to going into the Special Curriculum for gifted students, specializing in Ecology. One day, during a storm, he meets a young boy who has climbed in through his bedroom window. The boy Nezumi, who is a fugitive is suffering from a gunshot wound. Shion taking pity on him treats his wound and feeds him.

Because of this, Shion is stripped of his elite status and with his mother, Karan are forced to leave the Chronos to live in Lost town. Karan opens a bakery and tries to readjust to their new circumstances.

Four years later, Shion, now 16, works for the Park Maintenance of No.6 where he controls waste management robots. One day, Shion and his coworker discover the body of an apparently old man in park. When the man's death is not reported in the news, and Shion finds out that the body belonged to a man only 31 years old, he becomes suspicious of a government cover-up. Shion later witnesses his coworker age rapidly and die as a wasp emerge from his neck. Shion is then arrested under the pretense of being suspected for murdering his coworker. Nezumi saves him from the authorities and takes him to West Block, the slums outside the city. Shion nearly dies himself when he is infected with a parasitic wasp, but Nezumi saves him a second time, though Shion is left with white hair and a scar that looks like a red snake curling from his ankle to his neck.

No.6 is a beautifully imagined anime with a gripping storyline. The mystery behind the city Chronos, the parasitic wasps and the fates of Shion, Nezumi a talented singer, dancer and actor whose stage name is Eve and Shion's closest childhood friend Safu unfolds in a series of 11 segments.

There is a strong yaoi element threaded throughout the series. Shion and Nezumi have a very strong attraction to each other that I would have liked to have seen taken further. But for all that, the anime tells this story very well.

This is one of the better anime series I have seen for a while. While it probably won't happen, I would love to see a sequel to this excellent series.
